Jumpstart: Handmade on Amazon
the Former Amazonian's mini-Guide to the Artisan's Launch on Amazon
Is Handmade at Amazon Right for You?
Are you someone who makes your own products and sells them on Amazon, Etsy, another craft site or maybe even at craft fairs? If so, you may not be aware of a new marketplace on Amazon that launched in October 2015. It is called Handmade at Amazon. It sits within the overall Amazon.com site; however, it is a separate department that allows Artisans the ability to showcase their beautiful creations by developing their own store and having access to unique detail pages that are not found anywhere else on Amazon. In order to gain access to this, you do need to apply. The application as well as information about Handmade at Amazon can be found here.
One of the benefits of listing your products on Handmade is that your special handcrafted goods do not get lost in the plethora of product options that are mass-produced from overseas. When a Customer searches on Amazon, your products will still how up in search results but if a Customer is strictly looking for a handmade item, they can quickly go to the Handmade department and find your products. We know handmade items are unique and special as they are made by you and there typically is a story behind your creation. Handmade developed a way for Artisans to explain this by allowing each Artisan to create their own store or Artisan profile; here is an example of one. In addition, if you have a product that is customizable (i.e. product comes in different colors, size or can be engraved) Handmade developed customizable detail pages such as this one.
If you are a jewelry seller and make your own products, this is a great spot for you! The referral fee for Handmade is 15% vs. the Jewelry category charges 20%. In addition, you do not need to go through an audit in order to be accepted into the category. You need to apply like all Artisans but there isn’t the rigorous upfront audit that is required for Fine Jewelry Sellers in the Jewelry category.
Other benefits to consider is that if you are apprehensive, you can always list some of your products both in your current retail category as well as Handmade; they just need to be different products. If your products are not customizable, you can still take advantage of Amazon’s FBA program. Lastly, Handmade at Amazon Artisans have a dedicated Seller Support team they can reach out to 24 hours a day to help answer any questions you may have.
If you are an Artisan who creates your own products then we highly recommend you check out Handmade at Amazon.
This course was created in collaboration between Rachel Johnson Greer and Marell Morel, one of the founding launch members of Amazon Handmade in 2015.
